It is not simply the NUMBER of patents that counts; it's the QUALITY of those patents. Patents can range in category from patents on composition of matter (generally lower value, as this is the most easily obtained form of patent), to patents based on GENOMIC evidence and in-vivo effects. Thus, for the consumer conducting his due diligence, patent-searches can pose a challenge, as a patent can either demonstrate a company’s quality and depth of study, or they can veil the absence of it.
